After 8 months of the release of The Get Down Part 1 on Netflix, we finally have access to the rest of the 5 episodes of the most comprehensive dramatised show about the evolution of Hip Hop. It’s one of the most expensive television series to make alongside Game Of Thrones and Lost, costing an average $10 million per episode.

The first part of the series takes us through the lives of characters symbolic of varying elements that contributed to the birth of Hip Hop (emceeing, djing, graffit and dancing) during the phasing out of the funky sexy disco era to give way to a more raw and youthful voice of the streets.

The Get Down Part 2 sees The Get Down Brothers (Justice Smith as Ezekiel “Zeke” “Books” Figuero, Shameik Moore as Curtis “Shaolin Fantastic” Caldwell, Skylan Brooks as Ronald “Ra-Ra” Kipling, Tremaine Brown Jr. as Miles “Boo-Boo” Kipling and Jaden Smith as Marcus “Dizzee” Kipling) and Mylene Cruz (Herizen F. Guardiola) at a considerable amount of success locally, taking their passions to the next level and out of their borough.

With input from Hip Hop legends NAS and Grandmaster Flash, it’s wild to witness history in the making through the vibrancy that creator Baz Lurhmann and his wife Catherine Martin, an Oscar-winning costume designer in particular for by-gone eras. The series draws on Flash’s own anecdotes, most notably in the scenes that include the art of turntablism that he pioneered.
