More about Kid Taz and the Kids Hip Hop Course:

With a host of incredible achievements under his belt at such a young age, Kid Taz beings energy and enthusiasm to his Kids classes that is fuelled by his passion to share dance with the youth. At the age of 16 he won the prestigious 1 versus 1 Redbull Shadow Wars Bboy Championship in 2007; in 2009 he won the Australian Hip Hop Championships and represented Australia in the World Finals in Las Vegas, and later that year won the Platform Hip Hop Festival’s annual Freak the Technique Bboy/Bgirl crew battles.

After his experience in going straight through to the Top 100 in So You Think You Can Dance (Australia), the following year saw him win the first Australia’s Got Talent with Justice Crew, sparking a series of national tours, various singles and an album released, several music videos and performing as the pre-acts for many international artists.

Don’t miss this exclusive chance to be taught by a highly accomplished dancer! Kid Taz’s Hip Hop Course will cover the fundamentals of hip hop and breaking and will be focused on having students’ self-expressions and building self-confidence through dance while having fun.

For all the crate diggers out there…
Hmmm it’s been a while since I last blogged and the first time I am actually going to put up a post around something I am selling. Basically I have a shitload of Hip Hop, R&Bm Reggae and House vinyl records to sell, even some break beats and scratching LPs, that are all pretty much brand new (sealed) or played a few times by people sampling the vinyl. So here’s the list below, let me know if you are interested in any of the records and we can work something out. The brand new stuff is usually sold around $20-$35 right now in other record stores, a bit cheaper online, so reasonable offers are accepted.

You can either pick them up from Sydney CBD or I’ll let you know how much postage and handling will cost and factor that in. Just email me: trina @ hiphop.org.au

One of the most influential hip hop groups are performing in Sydney this week. Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, Inspectah Deck, Gza, U-God, Masta Killa, DJ Allah Mathematics, DJ Street Life and Young Dirty, collectively known as The Wu Tang Clan come together for the first time on Australian shores.

Wu Tang Clan were formed back in 1992, being led by RZA and shortly after producing what is regarded as one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time in “Enter The Wu-Tang(36 Chambers)”. Wu Tang Clan can be described as highly controversial, unpredictable, influential and has been responsible for highly successful solo careers in many of it’s members. The success of the group has led to a clothing line and a video game – not to mention movie soundtracks.

The Wu have rarely been seen together with so many of their members, so this is an exciting opportunity to appreciate such a large influence on the hip hop industry. Their first concert sold out quickly and due to high demand a second concert has been scheduled for the 4th of August, grab tickets here as they are sure to go soon!

‘Paper Tigers’ An Exhibition by Matthew ‘Mistery’ Peet.

Matthew ‘Mistery’ Peet is a graffiti artist, B-Boy and MC & has been one of the pioneers of the Australian hip hop and graffiti scene since it’s genesis in the early 1980s. Renowned both locally and internationally, ‘Paper Tigers’ showcases the art of one of Australia’s most talented and respected graffiti artists…

“The term ‘Paper Tigers’ usually is made in reference to someone who acts menacing but is actually harmless. This exhibition however serves to use the term to refer to cultural totems and icons.

Many cultures have adopted a native animal as their totem, usually a noble, brave or fearsome animal to present a dignified and awe-inspiring persona. With the exception of the indigenous community all Australians have come from a foreign land, and with their migration they bring with them their various cultural identities and symbols. Big cats have captured that state of mind for generations and many nationalities have utilized them to represent themselves on their coat of arms and flags etc.

Newspapers can also reflect the thoughts and needs of a community, so incorporating the Australian versions of a community’s media helps to communicate on behalf of them on a very different level. Who we are as Australian citizens is the sum total of our traditions, our individual stories and now our futures in a common land, our media serves to mark this to some extent.

Aesthetically the random imagery of newspaper print juxtaposed with the planned shapes and natural colours of a creature creates a dynamic that communicates the tension contained within all communities. The old and the new, traditions and evolution, positive and negative memories are a universal theme for all of us.

Working for many years as a graffiti artist has given me a deep appreciation for the letter form. Although there is a world of possibilities to explore within Roman lettering I also find the beautiful lines and different patterns of foreign fonts inspiring and so incorporating them into these works is merely an attempt to pay some sort of homage”.
